Podcast Supercomputing in Europe: How HPC Is Transforming AI Trading

Can artificial intelligence respond to changing financial markets more effectively than traditional trading algorithms? And what role does high-performance computing play in developing such solutions? A new episode of the Supercomputing in Europe podcast presents a real-world example of how HPC and artificial intelligence can be applied in the financial sector.<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The guest of the new episode is Marc P\u00f6tter, Managing Director of Smart-Markets GmbH, a company developing automated trading systems for stock and foreign exchange markets. In his conversation with Andreas Lintermann from the J\u00fclich Supercomputing Centre (JSC), he shares the company\u2019s experience of using high-performance computing to develop an AI-based trading system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When a Trading Algorithm Learns to Adapt<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Traditional automated trading systems operate according to predefined rules. However, financial markets are constantly changing, and an algorithm that performs well during one period may gradually lose its effectiveness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of the EuroCC project, Smart-Markets therefore explored whether machine learning \u2013 specifically reinforcement learning \u2013 could be used to create a system capable of adapting its decisions to changing market conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More than ten years of high-frequency EUR\/USD market data, capturing individual price changes, were used to train and subsequently test the AI agent. Processing such large volumes of data and running repeated experiments is also a good example of a task where high-performance computing infrastructure can provide significant benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From Experiment to Proof of Concept<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The results showed that the AI agent gradually learned to make its own trading decisions and, in a simplified test scenario, was able to adapt to changing market conditions even during periods of negative market development. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the same time, the project also revealed the limitations of the current solution. The test scenario did not include transaction costs, and under more realistic conditions, it has not yet been possible to train a system capable of generating a profit. The result is therefore a Proof of Concept rather than a ready-to-use investment tool. Further development could include, for example, broader data inputs and more complex modelling of real-world trading conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

HPC as a Tool for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Smart-Markets example also demonstrates one of the key roles of the EuroCC network \u2013 making high-performance computing accessible to companies with no previous experience in HPC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through the Proof of Concept, Smart-Markets was able to experiment with a new AI technology without having to build its own computing infrastructure or possess in-house AI expertise from the outset. HPC resources made it possible to process and analyse large volumes of high-frequency financial data and test new approaches to adaptive trading systems. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Connecting companies with computing infrastructure, expert knowledge and support for developing new solutions is one of the key roles of the National Competence Centres within the EuroCC network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
